FREE KIDS FISHING DAY AT TENOROC
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is holding its free ninth annual “Kids Only” fishing derby on Saturday, April 7, at the Tenoroc Fish Management Area (FMA) in Lakeland. The free fishing derby will run from 8 a.m until 1 p.m. and is open to kids, ages 15 and under.
The special event will be conducted on Derby Lake, a 17-acre phosphate pit stocked with sunfish, largemouth bass and catfish. The lake has three fishing piers and a 200-foot fishing boardwalk that is accessible to mobility impaired anglers.
The free event features a casting contest and drawings for door prize items donated by local merchants. A complimentary lunch consisting of hot dogs, chips and sodas, will be provided by Kash n’ Karry. Goody bags will be awarded to all participants. Bait will be provided free of charge; however, anglers are encouraged to bring there own tackle. Although there is no fee,
pre-registration for the kids only event is required. Call Tenoroc FMA at (863) 499-2421 between 8 a.m and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to pre-register.
The Tenoroc FMA, with more than 1200 acres of public phosphate pit fishing, is one of the premier angling destinations in Florida. In addition to special events, Tenoroc FMA is regularly open to public fishing, Friday through Monday, from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on Christmas and New Year’s days. A daily-use permit, available at the Tenoroc FMA office, and a freshwater fishing license are required of nonexempt anglers.
The Tenoroc FMA is located just northeast of Lakeland. From Interstate 4, take SR 33 (exit 20), south one mile to CR 659 (Combee Road). Go left on CR 659 about one mile to Tenoroc Mine Road and turn left, then go three miles to the stop sign at the Tenoroc Fish Management Area office and turn right to Derby Lake.
From US 92, go north on 659 to Tenoroc Mine Road and turn right on Tenoroc Mine Road. Go three miles to the stop sign at the Tenoroc Fish Management Area office and turn right to Derby Lake.
