By September, Floridians young and old are clamoring for signs that summer's heat and humidity are on the wane. Take heart - since the official first day of summer (Summer Solstice) on June 21, the hours of daylight have slowly been decreasing. In the northern hemisphere, the earth's surface is beginning to cool. Look at the calendar with your child and draw a circle around September 22, the first day of fall (Autumnal Equinox).
For a week or so, note the time of sunset and sunrise listed in the daily newspaper. Day length will continue to contract until December 21, the first day of winter (Winter Solstice). | |
