Recreational Gulf red snapper and South Region spotted seatrout seasons close Nov. 1 October 29, 2007 The recreational harvest seasons for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico and spotted seatrout in the South Region will close on Nov. 1. These closures occur each year to help rebuild overfished red snapper stocks in the Gulf and maintain the abundance of spotted seatrout in Florida waters. The harvest and possession of red snapper by sport fishers is prohibited beginning Nov. 1 in all Gulf waters. The reopening date for next year?s Gulf red snapper sport season has not been formally established; however, it is likely to be in late spring 2008. New regulations for Gulf red snapper are being developed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and federal fisheries managers. These regulations should be finalized by February 2008. For spotted seatrout, all harvest and possession is prohibited from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 in the South Region. This area includes all waters south of the Flagler-Volusia counties line in the Atlantic and south of a line running due west from the westernmost point of Fred Howard Park Causeway, which is about 1.17 miles south of the Pinellas/Pasco counties line in the Gulf. |
