Description:
The highlights of this Palm Beach County barrier island park include a nature center, 1.8 miles of undeveloped beach, two self-guided nature trails through subtropical hammock, and a 1,600-foot boardwalk over a mangrove-lined estuary.
Watchable wildlife:
In the estuary, check for year-round populations of osprey, brown pelican, anhinga, cormorant and snowy egret. Roseate spoonbills are occasional summer visitors. The hammocks attract warblers during migration. Several dune crossovers lead to the beach, a good place to find gulls, terns and shorebirds. Look for the tracks of nesting loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles in the summer. Sign up in advance for ranger-led sea turtle walks, conducted at night in June through mid-July, and for snorkeling tours of the offshore limestone reef, June though August.
