A primary goal of Florida's Wildlife Legacy Initiative is to fill information gaps on the life history, status, trend, population and management needs for Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). This list includes mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish (freshwater and marine) and invertebrates (marine, freshwater and terrestrial). To prioritize our efforts, we are focusing on those SGCN having a low or unknown population size (status), and a declining or unknown population trend. This includes 631 species!
Filling all of these data gaps is an enormous task that is too big for FWC to undertake alone. In partnership with several other conservation agencies and organizations, we are making significant progress towards filling information gaps for numerous groups of species. Most of these projects address multiple SGCN. For more information on FWLI data gaps, please contact the Grants Coordinator, Laura Morse.
