On this 1st day of December in the year 2010, the
Board of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
hereby declares:
WHEREAS, the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission has cause to give thanks to Hersey
A. "Herky" Huffman for his steadfast commitment to the conservation
and enjoyment of Florida's abundant fish and wildlife resources,
and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman is a
Floridian from birth, with a passion for outdoor sports and land
conservation that has never wavered, and he has promoted his love
for fishing, hunting and youth conservation education to everyone
he meets, and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman served
honorably as an FWC Commissioner for over seven years, including a
term as Chairman in 2005, and during this time demonstrated
outstanding leadership, vision, dedication and true passion in
support of Florida's fish and wildlife resources, resulting in
great progress for statewide conservation efforts, and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman, in his
role as Commissioner, was a staunch advocate for agency initiatives
to secure a brighter future for hunting and fishing; recognized the
importance and value of making hunting and fishing opportunities
available to the public; and in that regard, worked tirelessly and
successfully to expand public hunting and fishing opportunities
statewide, and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman has always
believed in involving the public in fish and wildlife conservation
efforts, as evidenced by pioneering a local fishing tournament for
blind anglers and organizing a joint effort to involve youngsters
in managing wild turkey habitat, and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman opened the
world of hunting and fishing to the visitors and citizens of
Florida, from his days as a fishing guide to serving as the
outdoors editor for the Sanford Evening Herald,
and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman is a strong
advocate for and actively supported projects to protect Florida's
unique fish and wildlife habitats from the threat of invasive
plants and animals throughout his many years of public service,
and
WHEREAS, Herky Huffman's lifelong
commitment to the conservation of Florida's fish and wildlife has
contributed to Florida's status as one of the premier states in the
nation for hunting, fishing and successful conservation and
stewardship of our natural resources:
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by
the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in a duly
constituted and assembled meeting:
- That we do hereby attest and record on behalf of the citizens
of this great state of Florida, and for all who come after us, our
deep appreciation for the valuable service rendered by Commissioner
Herky Huffman;
- That the Commission and all Floridians owe Commissioner Herky
Huffman a huge measure of respect and gratitude for his
unprecedented contributions;
- That this resolution is an official recognition and public
expression of gratitude for Commissioner Herky Huffman's dedication
and concern for helping people around the world enjoy and protect
our unique and valuable wildlife and fisheries resources;
- That the Commission hereby supports and applauds the
establishment of the Herky Huffman Lifetime Achievement Award for
Youth Conservation Mentoring in cooperation with the Wildlife
Foundation of Florida;
- That the Commission hereby recognizes Commissioner Herky
Huffman's lifetime contributions, particularly to those wild lands
surrounding his local community, including those lands encompassing
and surrounding the Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area, and hereby
supports and proclaims that from this day forward, this area shall
be known as the "Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area"
in honor of his service;
- That we do hereby record the sentiments of this resolution
forevermore in the minutes and records of the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission.
DONE AND RESOLVED, in this duly
constituted and assembled meeting at Weston, Florida, this 1st day
of December, 2010.
