Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated (pronounced: pie-lee-ate-ed) woodpeckers have bright red crests on top of their heads. They usually live in forests that have lots of large trees. Woodpeckers use their long bills to dig out and eat insects living deep inside tree bark. Other favorite foods include ants, acorns and wild cherries. Their strong bills also help them carve out nesting holes in dead trees.
