10 Commandments of Releasing Your Bass

Illustrated by Cliff Shelby; Text by Phil Chapman

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages anglers to release any fish that they are not going to use.  Moreover, fisheries conservation laws require some fish to be released based on bag (creel) limits or size restrictions.  Whether you are releasing fish voluntarily or to comply with the law, knowing how to do so properly will greatly increase the fish's chance for survival.

1. Use hooks with small barbs, no barbs or flattened barbs.
2. Strike quickly when a bass takes your bait.
3. Play fish rapidly.
4. Don't use abrasive landing nets.
5. Handle bass by lower jaw only. Be careful not to bend the lower jaw down.
6. Keep fish out of water as little as possible.
7. Use de-hooking tools.
8. Cut the line if hook is imbedded deeply.
Stomach acid will dissolve the hook.
9. Don't use fish stringers.
Revive fish when necessary.
Move it gently back and forth in the water.
