Amanda Rice flushes an alligator's stomach
The alligator’s stomach is filled and emptied 3 times to ensure that all of the contents are expelled.

Field collection of alligator stomach contents was conducted from April through October 2002. Stomach content samples were obtained from 103 alligators during the 2002 season (45 from Lake Griffin, 25 from Lake Apopka, and 33 from Lake Woodruff).

During the 2003 season stomach content samples were obtained from 32 alligators (16 from Lake Griffin and 16 from Lake Apopka). Samples were obtained by stomach flushing, fixed in formalin and preserved in 70% ethanol for future sorting and identification.
