Welcome to the Wings Over Florida Junior Birder Program. The program was developed to help teachers introduce younger students (3rd - 4th grade) to bird watching.

This guide has two parts, a teachers guide with background, resources and specific directions to lead students through the program.  It also has a Bird Detective activity guide for students that introduces nearly 50 species of common birds found in Florida.  The activities cover important science and language arts benchmarks for Sunshine State Standards and FCAT writing prompts. Visit the Teachers Resources page to download both of these guides.

To make this program widely available we have posted it to the web site.  Print one teachers guide and one student guide.  Make two-sided copies of the student guide with page 1 and 2 back to back, page 3 and 4 back to back and so on.  Copy one activity guide for each student. The pages are laid out so the two-sided pages can be folded in half to make a small booklet.

When students have identified and listed 15 birds, they receive the hummingbird certificate.  We have posted the hummingbird certificate in full color for your convenience. You can download or print these certificates from our Teacher Resources page.

Encourage your students to use our Student Resources where they can try their hand at being a bird detective and receive instant feedback to the answers they submit.

We hope you enjoy learning about Florida's bird life.
