Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) are investigating a deadly boating accident that occurred Sunday morning in the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County.

The victim, Richard Cozzi, 65, of Indiantown, died en route to shore, despite a rescue attempt by the crew of a nearby charter vessel. He had been thrown from a 20-foot fishing vessel after it took on a wave and capsized in rough surf. The captain of the vessel involved in the accident, James Mason, 50, of Indiantown, also was thrown overboard, but survived.

The men were not wearing life jackets.
