Still time to sign up for W. Palm Beach women's outdoor workshop

Wanted:  Adventurous and outdoorsy women wishing to learn more about Florida's great outdoors in a comfortable, noncompetitive, hands-on environment.

If this could be you, contact Lynne Hawk with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 561-625-5122 to register for the next Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop.

The three-day workshop will be Nov. 12-14 at the Everglades Youth Camp, in the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area, near West Palm Beach.  Sessions begin Friday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. and end Sunday, Nov. 14, with lunch.

Although designed with women in mind, the workshop is open to anyone 18 years and older who wants to improve his or her outdoor skills while enjoying several recreational activities.

The program offers a fun and supportive atmosphere for participants wishing to try new things and enjoying the camaraderie of other folks wanting to do the same. In four, three-and-one-half-hour sessions, the BOW workshop teaches skills associated with fishing, hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation, at all levels of physical activity.

"The most popular classes are primitive chef, canoeing/kayaking basics, basic wilderness survival skills, and introduction to handgun shooting and hunting," said Lynne Hawk, BOW state coordinator for the FWC.

The cost for the three-day workshop is $175, and there are a limited number of discounted slots available for low-income participants, single parents and college students attending the workshop for the first time. The workshop is restricted to 100 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
