Two Middleburg teens were killed in a boating
accident on Black Creek in Clay County Monday afternoon.
Travis Hanner (DOB 09/17/93) and Halee Mickey (DOB
10/27/95) were passengers in a boat operated by Ted Hanner (DOB
11/17/61), also of Middleburg, according to Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators.
The two teens were seated in the front of the boat.
The operator stepped to the stern of the vessel, and the boat
veered toward the north bank of the creek. The vessel then went
under a tree that was growing out over the water. The two teens
were struck by the tree and died at the scene from their
injuries.
The operator was taken to Shands Hospital in
Jacksonville, where he was treated and released.
The boat was a 1985 18-foot, 4-inch Baja bass
boat.
The FWC is investigating the accident.
