The FWC received reports about the dead birds over Thanksgiving weekend. Many of the birds were too decomposed to determine cause of death, so officials are unsure what happened to the animals.

The agenda includes world-renowned aquatic plants expert Dr. William Haller, director of the University of Florida/IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants as well as discussions regarding FWC aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement projects, plans for upcoming hydrilla treatment areas and an update of ongoing maintenance work around the lake.

People submitting sightings can include photos on the reporting Web page, which contains photos to help identify the target reptile species, and FWC scientists will identify submitted photos of unknown reptile and amphibian species. For the next year, researchers will also be conducting a pilot project in the Keys, testing effective survey methods and collecting distributional information and genetic samples.

Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day (established to be the first Saturday after Mother’s Day each year) was created by FWC Commissioners to help draw attention to the lionfish issue. Lionfish are a nonnative, invasive species that have a potential negative impact on native species and habitat.
