Description:
Two separate tracts feature a nature center, boardwalk, and miles of trails through habitats that include sandhills, freshwater marshes and prairies, hardwood hammocks and the second-largest contiguous tract of old growth longleaf pine in Florida. Watchable Wildlife:
Gopher tortoises inhabit the sandhills areas, while bull frogs, pig frogs, gopher frogs, barking tree frogs, dwarf sirens and tiger salamanders find refuge in the shallow waters of May's Prairie. A variety of herons, egrets, ibises and wood ducks are found year-round on the prairie, and ring-necked ducks, lesser scaups and hooded mergansers are reliable winter visitors. More than seven species of snakes reside here, as well as, pileated and red-headed woodpeckers, warblers (black and white, yellow-throated, pine and palm), hermit thrushes and summer tanagers.
