Cypress and Mixed Hardwood Swamp

Cypress swamps on Hilochee have been modified to varying degrees by logging, fire, hydrological modifications, and agriculture. Pond cypress is the dominant overstory species, but the cypress is often mixed with hardwoods such as red maple, pop ash, black gum, sweet bay, silk bay, and loblolly bay. The understory often contains wax myrtle, willow, elderberry, dahoon holly, buttonbush, royal fern, and sawgrass.
