Cattails
|
Large portions of Holey Land are covered with cattails. Although
a native species, cattails choke out open-water habitat vital
to alligators, wading birds, and waterfowl. The explosion of cattails
was caused by past alterantions of water levels and was also fueled
by phosphorus run off from agricultural areas. In 1999, a project
was launched to spray cattails by helicopter with a herbicide.
This effort will provide additional open water areas to improve
duck
hunting and will benefit a wide array of wildlife including
the endangered snail kite.
