Hunting

Quota hunt permits are required during the archery, muzzleloading gun, and general gun seasons. During the small game season (which includes hogs), a hunting license and Wildlife Management Area permit are required. Hunting does is prohibited on this area.  There are some nice size bucks to be had if you are willing to do some serious walking and don't mind getting your feet wet.

Fishing

With 9 miles of canals and several old borrow pits/ponds, good fishing opportunities abound. Popular species include largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and warmouth. When the fish disperse, during the rainy season, the flag ponds provide good fishing. You can fish from canoe, kayak, boat, or along the bank within the management area boundaries. Keep in mind that there are no boat ramps and only trolling motors are recommended. Fishing license information.

Wildlife Viewing

Canal levees and trails provide good opportunities to see wildlife. Bobcats, wild turkeys, deer, hogs, alligators, river otters, softshell turtles, cooters, various snakes, and coyotes are found on the area. Hungryland is also a great place to view birds like the snail kite, osprey, and the red-shouldered hawk along with numerous other species including lots of wading birds. You may request a copy or download or print the Hungryland Bird List - pdf file. Visit the Wildlife page for more information about the area's wildlife.

West Jupiter Wetlands Trail

Hiking

The West Jupiter Wetlands trail is 2 miles long and can be accessed from the south side of Canal 6 Road (inside the main gate). The trail ends at Indiantown Road (SR 706). The trail bisects a freshwater marsh about 1 mile in and is inundated much of the year except during the later portion of the dry season (March through May). The Old Jupiter-Indiantown Grade trail can be accessed off Pratt-Whitney Road (CR 711). This trail runs approximately 2 miles to the east and 3 miles to the west of CR 711. The Grove Trail is a 4 mile loop that starts/ends at the south end of Canal Road 7.  This trail follows a levee that surrounds an old citrus grove. The best time to hike (and keep your feet dry) is January through May.  Visitors can also hike along any of the canal roads.  Map of Hungryland WMA - pdf file
