Bonamia Grandiflora
|
The Florida bonamia is the only member of the genus
Bonamia in Florida. It is federally listed as threatened
and state listed as endangered and is found in openings or disturbed
areas in white sand scrub. Its bright blue flowers (fading to
pale blue in the afternoon when they close) bloom from May through
August. The Florida bonamia can be distinguished from the common
morning-glory by its small, oval leaves and shorter, trailing
stems.

Chionanthus Pygmaeus
|
The pygmy fringe tree is endemic to central Florida
where it is found in scrub, sandhill, and xeric hammocks, mostly
on the Lake Wales Ridge. Listed as endangered, the pygmy fringe-tree
is usually less than 10 feet tall and may form thickets with evergreen
scrub oaks and shrubs. Its small, fragrant, white flowers appear
in clusters in the spring, but the pygmy fringe-tree may be identified
by its leathery, yellow-green leaves in the summer and its knobby
twigs in the winter.

Cladonia Perforata
|
Perforate reindeer lichen is endemic to Florida
rosemary scrub. The population in the Panhandle was severely impacted
by Hurricane Opal in 1995, making conservation of the remaining
populations on the Lake Wales Ridge and the Atlantic Coastal Ridge
even more critical. Listed as endangered, perforate reindeer lichen
gets its name from the large conspicuous holes found below each
branching point.

Warea Carteri
|
Listed as endangered, Carter's mustard is endemic
to sandhills, scrubby flatwoods, and inland and coastal scrub
of south and central Florida. It produces numerous rounded flower
clusters with up to 60 flowers from September through October.
Carter's mustard appears only after fires, making it difficult
to estimate remaining populations.
