Swamp/Floodplain and Bottomland
Forest
Swamp/floodplain and bottomland forest is characterized
by an open canopy forest of widely spaced pine trees with little
or no understory but a dense ground cover of herbs and shrubs.
Mesic flatwoods occur on relatively flat, moderately to poorly
drained terrain. During the rainy season, water inundates much
of the flatwoods. Nearly all the plants and animals in the flatwoods
are adapted to periodic fire.
