Coquina Donax spp.
Coquina clams can be found from Virginia to Florida, and as far
west as Texas. Within this range several species occur, both
subtidally and intertidally. The most common species is the
variable coquina (Donax variabilis) which may grow 0.75-1"
in length and occurs in a variety of colors and patterns. Coquina
are a common species on most Florida beaches and represent an
important food source for shorebirds and other beach dwelling
animals.
