The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission approved a list of hunting rule changes Wednesday for
the North Central Region, including some expanded hunting
opportunities.
One such rule change establishes the Lower
Econfina River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Taylor County.
The new WMA will offer 16-day archery, three-day muzzleloading
gun, 42-day small game and nine-day spring turkey seasons in
addition to fishing and frogging throughout the year.
Quota permits won’t be required for any season,
fires will be prohibited, and rules will allow motorized
vehicles only on named or numbered roads. East of the Lower
Econfina River, motorized vehicles will be allowed only during
periods open to hunting. ATVs and motorcycles are prohibited,
but hunting with bird dogs and dogs with a shoulder height of
less than 15 inches will be legal. Hunting hogs with dogs is
prohibited.
Also, in Osceola WMA in Columbia and Baker
counties, the boundaries of the still and dog hunt areas were
reconfigured, increasing the size of the dog hunt area by 17,000
acres and increasing the number of dog hunt quota permits from
800 to 900. Dog hunters are required to use designated roads to
access the dog hunt area during the fox, deer-dog training and
general gun seasons. Hunters may possess dogs at the East Tower
Campground during the general gun season.
On the Blue Springs Unit of Twin Rivers WMA in
Hamilton County, bird dog training has been moved from October
to 14 days in November and December. Bird dog training permits
will be available from the FWC’s regional office in Lake City. A
January special-opportunity quail hunt on the area also gained
approval; the number of special-opportunity permits to be issued
will depend on a fall population survey.
