Becoming a Nonnative Pet Adopter

2008 Amnesty Day Demo

If you are interested in becoming an exotic pet adopter, you will need to fill out and submit an application. PDF
(See an example. PDF)

You may list up to 5 species on one application, as long as those species require very similar care. People who want to adopt a variety of animals will need to submit more than one application.

If your application is unsatisfactory, it will be returned to you for improvement. If your application is approved, you will receive a letter of acceptance.

To adopt animals at Amnesty Day events, adopters must bring their letter of acceptance. Adopters who attend Amnesty Day events and do not have their letter of acceptance will not be allowed to receive animals.

If you want to adopt animals that require licenses for personal possession, you must possess a valid license for that animal and attach a copy with your application. The types of animals that require licenses for personal possession include: Class II wildlife, Class III wildlife, reptiles of concern and venomous reptiles. Information on these types of animals and the permits required to possess them can be found online in the FWC Captive Wildlife area.

There is no fee to become an adopter, but adopters must have experience with and knowledge about the animals they would like to adopt. Amnesty Day events are not free pet giveaways and are not for inexperienced pet owners.
